Winemakers Notes

Country of Origin -  Chile

Terroir - This wine comes from the “Valle del Rapel”, in the central part of Chile 200 km south of Santiago. The vineyard, extending from the Andes Mountains to the Pacific coast, has a Mediterranean climate particularly well-suited to the development of the Carmenere grape. Baron Philippe de Rothschild Maipo Chile's winemakers have chosen the “Valle del Rapel” vineyards for the variety of their soils and the amplitude of their temperature differences. Two types of soil have been chosen to favour the full expression of the Carmenere grape: deep clay soil for the concentration and power of the fruit, and gravelly clay soil of the "maicillo" type, which brings elegance and minerality.

Vintage Conditions - The 2013 vintage was remarkable for the even distribution of rainfall over the entire vegetation cycle. As a result the vines were able to build up substantial water reserves, requiring much less irrigation and avoiding any water stress. These climatic conditions enabled the grapes to reach full maturity, yielding wine with attractively fresh fruit, a characteristic sometimes difficult to achieve in New World countries. The style of the vintage is unquestionably "oceanic", combining power with refinement and freshness in the manner of other atypical vintages such as 2005 or 2006. 2013 is a promising vintage with considerable ageing potential. It shows all the energy of the New World together with Old World refinement!

Vinification - The grapes are hand-picked then brought to the Baron Philippe de Rothschild Maipo Chile bodega, in the heart of the Maipo Valley. Combining wood and steel in a distinctive architectural style, the bodega has state-of-the-art equipment that also respects the great winemaking traditions. Escudo Rojo Carmenere is vinified in the Bordeaux manner, favouring extraction of the fruit and a supple, well-balanced tannic structure.

Tasting Notes -

Aspect: An attractive, dense ruby red with a purple tint.

Nose: The intense and generous nose opens on black cherry, black pepper and spice aromas subtly mingled with discreet notes of mocha and vanilla.

Palate: The attack is at once fresh, powerful and smooth, leading into a harmonious and sensual mid-palate in which well-rounded tannins mingle with lovely black berry fruit and bitter chocolate flavours, finely balanced by aromatic notes of roast coffee and pepper. The long, powerful and silky finish expresses all the class of Valle del Rapel Carmenere.
