Winemakers Notes

Category - Vintage Port (single year Port from an exceptional harvest)

Wine Region- Douro Demarcated Wine Region, this Vintage Port was made from grapes grown on Wiese & Krohn's Quinta do Retiro Nova (single vineyard) in town of Sarzedinho, which is situated in the Upper Corgo subregion of the Rio Torto Valley

Soil - Schistous

Alcohol - 20% Vol.

Total Acid -4.17 g/L.

Fixed Acid - 3.95 g/L.

Residual Sugar - 119.7 g/L.

Vintage Conditions - Very rainy winter. Due to unfavourable weather conditions during flowering there was poor and uneven fruit set which made crop thinning unnecessary. Hot & humid weather meant having to treat the vines to prevent disease. Summer was not as hot as in previous years and there was some rain. Two weeks before harvesting grapes ripened under ideal conditions. Vinifiation was done under ideal conditions.

Vinification / Aging - In modern "lagares" – stainless steel open tanks where mechanical feet simulate treading of grapes. Fermentation was interrupted through the addition of grape brandy in order to preserve a certain degree of natural sweetness. Aged in Wiese  & Krohn's cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the Atlantic coast, under the control of the Douro and Port Wine Institute. Bottled in June 2009, with out being fined or filtered.

Grape Varieties - Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz.

Tasting Note - Very deep red colour. Powerful, fruity aroma. Full-bodied and well balanced tannins and lengthy finish. Drinkable now but will improve with age up to 20- 30 years.

How to enjoy - Moderate room temperature. Combine this Vintage with Steak au Poivre or take it after meal with cheese, tarts, pies, cakes and berries.
