Winemakers Notes

Catagory - Vintage Port - A single year Port from an exceptional harvest.

Wine Region- Douro Demarcated Wine Region, situated in the North of Potugal and composed ot the Douro Valley and its tributaries. The 2005 Vintage Port was made from grapes grown in the Upper Corgo subregion, more precisely in Ervedosa do Douro.

Soil - Schistous

Alcohol - 20% Vol.

Total Acid - 3.76g/L.

Fixed Acid - 3.55g/L.

Residual Sugar - 106.3g/L.

Vintage Conditions - Extremely dry winter and spring. Very good flowering conditions. Hot summer - many vines deeply suffered from the dryness, but before the harvest one or two small rainshowers improved maturity of the grapes. Average yield, uneven quality, but some excellent Ports.

Vinification / Aging - In closed fermentation tanks. Fermentation was interrupted through the addition of grape brandy in order to preserve a certain degree of natural sweetness. Aged in Wiese  & Krohn's cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the Atlantic coast, under the control of the Douro and Port Wine Institute. Bottled after 2 years in oak in 2007 with out being fined or filtered.

Grape Varieties - The traditional varieties of the Douro Region for red Ports, such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz.

Tasting Note - Deep red colour. Fruity aroma with vegetal notes. Unctious and full bodied, balanced tannins with a lengthy finish. Drinkable now, but will profit from longer aging.

How to enjoy - Moderate room temperature. After meal cheese and cakes.
